Stephen Hawking net worth

Stephen William Hawking ( ( listen); born 8 January 1942) is an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. Hawking is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the US. In 2002, Hawking was ranked number 25 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. He was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge between 1979 and 2009 and has achieved commercial success with works of popular science in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general; his book A Brief History of Time appeared on the British Sunday Times best-seller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. Hawking has a rare early-onset, slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that has gradually paralysed him over the decades. He now communicates using a single cheek muscle attached to a speech-generating device.

I recently provided my voice to cover Monty Python’s “Galaxy Song” in a new music video. The opportunity to run over Professor Brian Cox and add to my musical resume were chances I just couldn’t pass up. -SH

Fifty years ago Gordon Moore made the observation that transistors – the fundamental building blocks of the microprocessor and the digital age – would decrease in cost at an exponential rate and increase in performance. Little did Moore know in 1965 that he had introduced a world-changing idea that would become known as “Moore’s Law” and would remain the competitive force bringing the benefits of technology to more people at ever lower costs. I have been very fortunate to have known Gordon Moore for many years. Moore’s law has been fundamental in helping me to continue to do my work around cosmology and also has assisted me personally. Without Moore’s Law I would not be able to communicate. I’m grateful to Gordon Moore for having made the observation and for it to have become the foundation of computing for so many year. As Moore says himself “whatever has been done, can be outdone!” I second that. -SH

I was delighted to appear as a live hologram to give two talks at Sydney Opera House. I enjoyed traveling at the speed of light although I would have loved to be there in person. It was a fabulous evening. My daughter Lucy and Paul Davies were at the other end to greet me. I just hope that people remember some of my other remarks, not just what I said about One Direction. Thank you to everyone who made this technological, scientific and creative evening possible! -SH

The New Horizons pioneering, decade-long mission is to travel to the outer reaches of our solar system, in order that we can discover more about our most distant planet, Pluto, and the Kuiper belt in which it is located. This July, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's New Horizons probe will fly by Pluto at 14km/s, using instruments to examine its atmosphere and surface and then transmit this information back 3 billion miles by X band for us to interpret and view. This would have been the subject of science fiction when I was at school, but is now science fact. I feel proud and honoured for such a momentous scientific mission to be completed within my lifetime, and plan to celebrate in my own way, with a Pluto party in July. My congratulations to everyone on the New Horizons team. With imagination and determination, it is humbling to see what we are capable of. -SH
